HB Blades played college football at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was named to the first team All Big East 3 times. During his senior season he was named as the Big East Defensive Player of the Year, and was also named as a 1st team All-American. He compiled 147 tackles in his senior season alone.

The Redskins drafted HB in the 6th round of the 2007 NFL draft. In his rookie campaign HB recorded 21 tackles. In 2008 he played in all 16 games with 5 starts, he made 60 tackles and made Redskins think of him as the MLB of the Future. HB Blades battled serious injuries in 2009, and still managed to record 40 tackles. He established himself as the best Special Teams player the team has. Many fans believe that it is only a matter of tim before HB gets his chance to start for the Skins.
